RETAIL SPACE
RETAIL SPACE (2025)
RETAIL SPACE began as an attempt to photograph as many dead and dying malls in Florida as possible, with a single image posted each day. Made exclusively with an iPhone, the project was initially drawn to the quiet emptiness of these spaces and the opportunity to photograph retail environments largely absent of people.
What began as a straightforward documentary survey shifted through the process of photographing closed storefronts and abandoned interiors. By placing the camera against darkened windows, security gates, and small openings, the phone's exposure capabilities revealed spaces that were often invisible to the naked eye. In many cases, the contents of these interiors remained unknown until the photographs were made.
The resulting images occupy a space between documentation and discovery. While rooted in the decline of Florida's shopping malls, the series evolved into a broader exploration of nostalgia, late-stage capitalism, and the tension between attraction and repulsion that recurs throughout the work. The photographs depict retail spaces caught between preservation and disappearance, lingering as remnants of a fading consumer landscape.
