Shanzai 山寨 is a Chinese term that refers to counterfeit or knockoff products—items that, despite their inauthenticity, are widely accepted as genuine or, at the very least, as possessing their own intrinsic validity. Unlike Western notions of forgery as deception, China’s shanzhai culture operates within a fluid understanding of authenticity, where imitation is not merely derivative but a creative reinterpretation. A copied object is allowed to exist in its own right, often evolving into something distinct from its original source.

In Shanzai Zhexue (山寨哲学)—literally translated as Counterfeit Philosophy—I explore this concept of simulated realities through a series of images featuring inflatable objects placed within natural environments. These synthetic, mass-produced replicas, designed to mimic real-world objects, are inserted into organic landscapes, creating an uncanny dialogue between the artificial and the natural, the real and the imitated.

The work also engages with deeper layers of symbolism, particularly in relation to the Chinese tradition of embedding double meanings in visual culture. Throughout history, Chinese artists, dissidents, and satirists have used metaphor, irony, and indirect symbolism to navigate restrictions and evade censorship. The imagery in Shanzai Zhexue taps into this tradition—an aesthetic form of cryptic protest that subtly critiques systems of control while operating within the very structures it seeks to question.

By embracing the philosophy of shanzhai, this series reflects on broader themes of authenticity, replication, and resistance. It asks the viewer to reconsider the boundaries between what is "real" and what is "valid," challenging rigid definitions of originality while paying homage to the ingenuity found within adaptation and reinvention.
